Grand Theft Auto V is the latest in a series of action-adventure games where you travel around one large location taking part in different criminal activities: pulling off heists, with lots of shooting and stealing and driving a variety of cars and other vehicles.

Our accessibility examiner, Ben Kendall, first checked Grand Theft Auto V accessibility 2 years ago. It was re-examined by Andy Robertson and updated 2 years ago.

NotesAccessibility Notes

In some circumstances, you'll need to be able to quickly react to in-game events, for example running for cover from gunfire or weaving though slow-moving traffic. In the options, menu, you can enable autosave, which will save your progress at regular intervals, so you can quickly get back to where you left off.

The text in the menus and is easy to read, contrasting well with the background (black on white or vice versa), but can be a little small. Some of the other text, including subtitles, however, can be hard to read, as it can blend in to the gameplay, especially outside or in bright areas. While all of the key dialogue is subtitled, none of the pedestrian conversations are. While nothing important is said in these, you might miss out on some of the more humorous conversations.

During missions, your objective is clearly stated and/or marked on the map. For example, in a car chase, the car you're following will be shown on the map as a big red spot, and the roads are also clearly marked, allowing you to take shortcuts and cut off the target's route.

The game is generally quite bright and colourful, allowing you to easily distinguish between objects. However, sometimes the realistic graphics mean some objects can blend in or be lost in the scenery and background.
