Play Overview
Away: The Survival Series (2021) is an open world narrative game about wildlife. It's a bit like playing inside a nature documentary. You explore, glide between the treetops, fight predators and find food on an island that has survived after a cataclysmic event. All the while your progress is narrated with a Planet Earth or Blue Planet style voice over that highlights its message of environmentalism and conservation.
Set in the near future, after a dreadful environmental disaster wiped out humans, and made most of earth uninhabitable. You play a small Sugar Glider on a mission to find your family. Along the way, you need to find food and water to survive, fight predators who'd otherwise eat you, glide across gaps, between burning trees and through dangerously small gaps.
Gameplay revolves around exploring the island, both in the air and on the ground as you forage for sustenance. You must fend off predators and other animals with a combination of well-timed dodges and rapid attacks. There's a mode you can unlock by completing the story that allows you to freely explore the island and transform any animal you please.
It's a novel concept, playing more like a documentary than a video game. With a clever story, powerful messages and an unusual set of game mechanics it offers a unique experience.
