Play OverviewPlay Overview

Concrete Genie (2019) is a running and jumping game about a young boy, who is isolated and bullied, in this exploration platform game with a twist. Using motion controls and buttons you can draw beautiful graffiti on the buildings, which come to life. These become the habitat for the creatures you create, who help you progress through the town. It’s a sad and dark setting for a small boy, but with the magical drawings you help him find hope, solve puzzles and gain courage.

Concrete Genie includes two optional VR modes. VR Experience is a quest to unlock a mysterious power and follow a genie while painting in a new way. VR Free Paint invites you to explore the town and paint with unlocked brushes.

There’s a power in this game. It presents a difficult situation – bullying, sadness, loss – in a gentle way that creates space to be hopeful and allows the emotions to be engaged.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Concrete Genie 4 years ago. It was re-examined by Ellen Robertson and updated 7 weeks ago.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 12 for frequent scenes of mild violence. Violence is mild and consists mainly of Ash being shoved around by the bullies. While visibly distressed, he is largely unhurt by their actions. Ash can also fight off dark monsters with his magical paintbrush, using it to restore them to their lighter, happier selves.

Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB EVERYONE 10+ for Fantasy Violence. Some creatures are shown chasing/menacing human characters as they flee in terror. Players must remove the “darkness” from these monsters by striking them with the magic brush, while also dodging the monsters' lunging attacks. Cutscenes sometimes depict bullies harassing and shoving Ash to the ground.

Skill Level

8+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. The themes of bullying and other kids being mean make this more suited for slightly older children. You need to enjoy being creative and taking time with the drawn sections of the game. There is also quite a bit of puzzle-solving that you need to keep going with even when you seem stuck.
