Play OverviewPlay Overview

De Blob 2 (2008) is a platform-puzzle game where you explore cartoon-style urban landscapes to recolour the city. You play a sponge-like creature that can collect coloured paint and take it to different locations to turn the buildings and landscape features to full colour. The three colours of red, yellow and blue, must be combined into green, orange, purple and brown.

As you colour the city the game's soundtrack, featuring live bands, gradually adds more instrumentation as well as an additional "layer" of sound corresponding to de Blob's current colour.

You take on missions in each area that include painting buildings, transforming landmarks and avoiding hazards like the pools of ink that turn de Blob black and cause him to lose paint. When you have finished painting a region there are side quests and missions to complete for more points.

De Blob 2 enhances this with the ability to perform dash attacks and break through obstacles. As you progress you can also increase your paint capacity and agility as well as earn power-ups with special abilities. It also adds some side-on two-dimensional platform stages.

The colour mixing and strong signposting and advice make it a great game for younger players. If you want a cooperative experience the first game is better. But the second game offers a more polished experience.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked De Blob 2 3 years ago. It was re-examined by Ellen Robertson and updated 4 weeks ago.
