Play OverviewPlay Overview

God of War (2018) is an adventure fighting game where You play super-strong Norse fantasy hero Kratos, as he takes his son Atreus on a brutal quest in the wake of his mother’s death. The exploration, puzzle-solving, climbing and fighting gameplay intertwine with a mythological family drama played out in a dramatic Scandinavian landscape. While Kratos confidently handles all manner of enemies, he struggles to find the strength to connect with his son, who is coming to terms with the loss of his mother.

The beauty of the world through which they pass and the singular confidence of Kratos in battle make the unfolding of their relationship both fascinating and at times heartbreaking. This turns the common power-fantasy video game on its head. Atreus needs care and nurturing rather than protection from his father, something which, like the gorgeous world they traverse, takes the whole game to fully navigate.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked God of War 4 years ago. It was re-examined by Ben Kendall and updated a year ago.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 18 for gross violence towards human characters, violence against vulnerable and defenceless characters and the use of sexual expletives. Violence in the game is mostly towards fantasy characters. Fantasy characters can be torn apart and decapitated by the player character, either by using an axe, a sword or the character's bare hands. When human characters are hit they make pained sounds and blood effects are shown upon impact of strikes, but it is not the same as the violence against fantasy characters. There is a scene in the game in which a young boy is grabbed by the throat, stabbed in the shoulder and carried away. There is also a scene in which a human characters neck is snapped during a close-up, with both characters covered in blood at the time. Another scene shows a human character being hit with an axe multiple times, with the final blow landing between his eyes, killing him instantly before the player character pulls the axe from his face. The game also contains the use of the word “*!@?*” and its derivatives.

Rated for younger players in Australia. Rated Mature Accompanied (MA 15+) for Strong Violence.
