Play OverviewPlay Overview

Horizon Zero Dawn The Frozen Wilds (2017) extends the Horizon Zero Dawn post-apocalyptic action adventure where you explore an overgrown landscape with now-crumbling remnants of modern life. The story of Aloy continues as she sets out to investigate a plague terminating from an arcane frontier known as the Forbidden West.

As Aloy, you venture north into The Cut. This leaves the warm lush valleys behind. Instead, the north is harsh, frozen and occupied by the stronger Banuk Tribe. They believe the machines are possessed by demons, something you agree to help them with.

The story runs alongside events of the main game which means you need to have completed some of the main game to access it (from the Enemy at the Gates quest line). As well as the new regions, there are five new machines, additional weapons and a new Traveller skill tree.

But this is more than an expansion of the original. The game has been upgraded visually as well. Motion capture and facial animations have been improved as well as more dynamic camera work and snow effects. It's clearly a stepping stone for the developer on the way to making Horizon Forbidden West.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Horizon Zero Dawn The Frozen Wilds 2 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 10 months ago.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 16 for depictions of realistic-looking violence towards human-like characters. This game contains frequent realistic-looking violence towards human-like characters. The playable character, Aloy, can be attacked by various fantasy and human characters. Her reactions are always realistic in nature, with her making audible pained sounds and falling to the floor when injured. When she is running low on health she is shown visibly injured as she grasps her side, and moves slower until she can be healed. While blood is not depicted, violent scenes during the cinematics can be quite realistic which contributes directly to the rating.

Rated for younger players in the US. ESRB TEEN with Blood, Drug Reference, Language, Mild Sexual Themes and Violence. Aloy uses arrows, spears, and explosive traps to injure and kill machines, boar, and occasional human enemies. Animals and humans emit small puffs of red blood when struck; one sequence depicts an abandoned camp with large blood stains on rocks and trees. The game contains a brief reference to sexual material (e.g., “Eighteen months hard labour in exchange for thirty years lounging around Elysium watching porn?”). In text/audio files, characters sometimes reference fictional drugs, overdoses, and getting high: “...not even out of junior high and already a drug addict”; “...I ran across a pusher who was selling Razorwing for eight bucks a tab”; "I'd spend a few days getting high, then OD on Overcast." The word “sh*t” appears in the text/dialogue.

Skill Level

12+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. Young players need to be able to traverse the huge world, both following a map as well as navigating the best route when climbing. You also need quick reactions for battle where you must switch to the best weapons to deal maximum damage to enemies. It's fast-paced and demanding. There are prolonged story elements of the game that while optional are a key ingredient of why players enjoy this experience.
