Jett: The Far Shore (2021) is a sci-fi adventure where you play inquisitive pilot Mei, exploring a mysterious planet on a nimble jet-powered craft. It draws on films like 2001: Space Odyssey and takes its time building atmosphere. Once it gets going it becomes a journey of discovery of your world's history. It's an (almost biblical) story about tradition, the land, and the inevitability of loss.

Play involves exploration at high speed while harvesting water vapour to keep your engine cool. For all the interstellar narrative, at first, it seems like a new kind of racing game. But the experience expands to include stealth, puzzle and action aspects.

You need to adapt your strategy to deal with these elements and progress through the open world. As you do you meet an ensemble of characters that develop the story of courage, wonder and regret. They each have their moments, monumental, laid-back exploration, occasional white-knuckle action, moments of heartfelt companionship, and a helping of existential dread.

This weaves together a story growing out of the myth of this planet. You slowly uncover The Hymnwave, an interstellar invitation that propelled a people to look beyond their troubled skies and across the sea of stars, for salvation. Once you complete the main story you can delve deeper to explore a robust mysterious endgame where the open-world immersive sim elements flourish.
