Mario Golf: Super Rush (1999) is a sports game that combines running and jumping with golfing skills. It's a proper recreation of golf, but with novelties, modes and characters to make it more entertaining for younger players.

Mario Golf games span a number of years. He appeared in NES Open Tournament Golf before coming to Mario Golf for the Nintendo 64, Game Boy Colour. Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour on GameCube, Mario Golf: Advance Tour on Game Boy Advance, Mario Golf: World Tour on Nintendo 3DS and most recently Mario Golf: World Tour on Nintendo Switch.

The more recent games in the series include role-playing elements where you develop your golfing character and explore a golfing world. However, since Mario Golf: Advance Tour on Game Boy Advance this has been less of a central feature.

Mario Golf: Super Rush adds an additional twist of running to the ball to gain an advantage. As with the other games you hit the ball with a series of button presses. This allows you to control the power as well as the bend and curve of the shot. You can opt for motion controls to simulate hitting the ball although this is not as nuanced as Wii Sports Golf (or Tiger Woods on the Wii) that focuses entirely on motion controls with a controller that isn't as fiddly to hold.

Additional modes make the game more fun for younger players. Speed Golf, for example, pits players to race to complete the hole first. After hitting the ball you run across the course toward their ball to take their next shot. There are other novelties to please youngsters, such as each character's Special Shot and Special Dash abilities. Finally, there is a story mode that includes role-playing game elements like gaining experience and stat progression.
