Play Overview
N.E.R.O.: Nothing Ever Remains Obscure (2015) is a story-driven first-person indie game with puzzles to solve and story threads to follow. The player character essentially walks a linear path and solves puzzles blocking their way, while a story is narrated.
"What moves has to stop," says the narrator at one point. The game explores some incredibly dark themes, including sickness, suicide and loss, through the eyes of a child. While the game isn't an out-and-out horror intended to scare the player, the surreal and dream-like environments do create an intense sense of unease. The game feels like an out-of-body experience, where danger looms rather than attacks.
The story, narration and puzzles might be too obscure for younger players to enjoy alone, but the experience can be fantastically rewarding and emotional when more mature players go alone or share with their families.
