Play Overview
Skate is a skateboarding series with innovative controls. One stick is used to control the skater's body and the other his feet. This resulted in the need to quickly motion different patterns to intuitively achieve different tricks - what become coined as the "flick-it" controls.
This moves the skate video-game genre on from Tony Hawk games that required you to hold a complex sequence of buttons to achieve the trick. It's harder to get to grips with this at first but can become a more instinctive way to control your character.
Set in the fictional city of San Vanelona you work up the ranks of a skater "career" as you explore the open world. You can create your own character and perform tricks such as ollies and grabs to earn points. Tricks can be used to complete challenges, such as racing and trick contests, which earn the player money that can be used to buy clothes and property or bet on events.
After over 10 years of hiatus, a new Skate game is in development, possibly called Skate 4. This followed a #skate4 online campaign by players.
Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Skate 3 3 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 14 months ago.

Age Ratings
Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB TEEN for Crude Humor, Drug Reference, Language, Mild Violence and Suggestive Themes. Players can perform tricks, run into cars and pedestrians, and even engage in a "Hall of Meat" challenge that rewards players for injuring themselves. Though pedestrians can be attacked with a skateboard, these bystanders may use tasers to stun aggressive players. Skateboard decals depict close-up images of women's buttocks and cleavage; signs around the city contain suggestive innuendo (e.g., "Strip-a-Grams," "Spooning," "BJ Industries," and "Master Bait & Tackle"). A skateboard deck image depicts a marijuana leaf under the words "Think Green." The dialogue contains language such as "sh*t," "p*ssy," and "a*s"; it also contains some crude humour (e.g., "Did you need me to bless it with some of my urine?" "Oh, I say do you have a laxative—I need some to release the pressure," and "Hey, you can just stay away from my rear, ya heard me? This ain't prison!").
