Play OverviewPlay Overview

Squad (2015) is an online-only shooting game where you fight in a team of 50 players against an opposing team. It is unusual because of a deep emphasis on teamwork, co-ordination and strategy, as well as being as realistic to real modern day warfare as possible. It is a full game version of a user created mode for the Battlefield 2 game called "Project Reality" that became very popular.

You select a server to play on that determines the game mode and map combination. There are over 20 different maps to play and several different game modes. Having knowledge of the maps and each of these game modes gives more experienced players an advantage:
  • Advance and Secure: The goal is to capture a set of control points in a predetermined order.
  • Insurgency: You destroy caches randomly placed by the Insurgents team.
  • Invasion: One team starts with all the control points and the other team must get them in a set order.

Your team is split into smaller groups of 9 or so players consisting of individual classes selected by each player, such as medics and snipers. Each of these smaller squads is led by a squad leader who communicates with the other leaders, acting as the only source of contact between squads. This line of command helps keep the necessary co-ordination in place and serves as yet another way the game tries to emulate reality.

The maps for these encounters are very large, some as big as 16 square kilometres. This combines with the realism in role and command to help capture the feel and scale of a real theatre of warfare. To do well in Squad, you need to develop shooting skill, combat strategy, discipline in chain of command and deep collaboration with other players.

Our examiner, Ben Kendall, first checked Squad 3 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 8 months ago.

Content Rating

This game has not yet been rated, but we anticipate it is likely to be rated PEGI 16.

Users Interact: The game enables players to interact and communicate with each other, so may expose players to language usually associated with older rated games.

Although not yet rated, likely to be PEGI 16 and ESRB MATURE 17+. When shot there is a splash of blood can be seen and blood remains on their clothing. As damage progresses they grunt or use phrases like "Ahh, my leg". If they take enough damage to enter the bleeding state they will breathe heavily until they are bandaged, or bleed until they fall down and die. When they are dead they remain prone on the floor. But there is no dismemberment or injury detail.

Skill Level

14+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. You need a good sense of direction, quick wits and fast reactions. Clear communication with teammates is key. Understanding how best to achieve the missions also helps, as does having the resilience to not mind when you lose and keep pushing ahead even if you are behind.
