Play OverviewPlay Overview

The Secret of Monkey Island (1990) is a classic tongue-in-cheek pirate adventure game. You click or tap the screen to explore locations, find items and complete puzzles. Playing a young man, Guybrush Threepwood, with a dream of being a pirate, you become embroiled in a kidnap rescue. Using intuition, guesswork and an eye for absurd comedy, you must solve the mystery of the island and save the day.

The series original success spawned many other games, as well as a re-released version:
  • The Secret of Monkey Island (1990) Amiga, Atari ST, Mac, PC
  • Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (1991)
  • The Curse of Monkey Island (1997)
  • Escape from Monkey Island (2000)
  • Tales of Monkey Island (2009) on Wii and PC
  • The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition (2009) on Mac, PC, iOS, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
  • Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge: Special Edition (2010) on Mac, PC, iOS, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

Age RatingsAge Ratings

Content Rating

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition is rated PEGI 12 for violence.

Rated for younger players in the US. ESRB EVERYONE 10+ for alcohol and tobacco reference, comic mischief, mild cartoon, violence, and suggestive themes. The game includes several comical depictions of characters, including a scene in which a "Meathook" character turns his back to the camera to reveal slightly exposed buttocks (e.g., "plumber's crack"). During a sword fight, one of the characters uses a suggestive metaphor to describe battle (e.g., "Sword fighting is kinda like making love. It's not always what you do, it's what you say."). While players have no direct control over the sword combat, they can sometimes make/hear comments such as "prepare to die" and "I will milk every drop of blood from your body." One character is depicted with a cigar in his mouth, and another character discusses how rum is an ingredient in a grog mixture.
