Thoth (2016) is a shooting game with a twist: you shoot the colour out of objects as they move in ways that make it hard to avoid them. It's quite challenging as the levels are fast-paced and often introduce new mechanics that you need to learn to cope with, all while getting used to the bare-bones control scheme.
The focus isn't on the graphics or the story. Instead, it's on the unique gameplay which has you control your ball with the joysticks only: one for movement, one for aiming. The simplified control scheme makes it a unique challenge that, when paired with the unusual game mechanics, makes it a fresh challenge. You also start on the last level, 64, and work your way back to level one.
When you enter a level, you are faced with several brightly coloured objects. Once you shoot them, they begin to turn black and chase after you. You beat a level once all the colour has been shot out of all the objects. As you progress, new gameplay elements are introduced; some objects are static but rapidly expand until you shoot them, introducing a level of timing to the game. Other objects are tethered together and react to each other. Others still will switch you to be in control of another ball in a different location, which takes quite some getting used to but offers a fresh challenge.
If you die twice on the same level in a row, you get sent back to the previous checkpoint, which are every four levels. Once you have completed the difficulty in this mode, you can replay it but with checkpoints only every 8 levels, then 12 levels, then no checkpoints at all, then randomised levels with no checkpoints, offering plenty of replayability.
You can also team up with a friend to complete the harder levels and make it past the more challenging areas. However, if one player dies, they become a fast-moving void that automatically chases after the other player.
The result of this is a short but challenging and refreshing mix of classic 2D shooter gameplay and game mechanics exclusive to the game that will attract fans of retro games, shooters, and the abstract and unusual.
