Play Overview
Type:Rider (2013) is an adventure game where you play as the two dots of a colon as they roll and jump through levels made up of the letters and styles of different ages of typography. The level design showcases the fonts, techniques, artwork, people, and even music for each age, creating an immersive atmosphere that is always changing and revealing something new.
Play consists of rolling two dots across the landscape and jumping in order to reach the end of the level. As you go you try and collect a stamp for each letter, but they are not essential. There are puzzles to solve as you progress, with challenges such as finding and moving another dot to fill a tray that shows three spaces.
This game is unusual because it focuses on the structural aspect of typography and text rather than words and sentences. The dots slide down, jump across, knock over, and otherwise physically manoeuvre the letters as objects. This is matched with imagery that pays homage to each font and its historical significance.
The information and history pages you unlock through gameplay provide a history and language lesson on the side and are greatly enhanced when paired with the imagery throughout the levels.
