Play OverviewPlay Overview

Windbound (2020) is an adventure game where you hunt, explore and craft to survive. But unlike games like Zelda when you die you start over and the world is endlessly changing for each new adventure. It's an exacting challenge that requires you to interpret the world and find your own narrative.

It focuses on nomadic hunting and exploration, together with custom boat building and an immersive tactile sailing experience. You play Kara who has been shipwrecked on an unknown land and must learn to adapt and survive while solving the mysteries of a series of forgotten islands. In the scattered ruins, you find there are the secrets of the past and glimpses of the future. Unravel the mystery behind them all and you may find more than just your way home.

Your boat plays a big part, as you carefully craft your own custom sailing vessel to take on the treacherous waters, traversing from one island to the next. Design your boat to battle tempestuous winds, monstrous waves, and deadly sea creatures.

The result is a really tough game (unless in Story mode) where you investigate a world full of potential. Some may find the lack of a central plot off-putting, but this is to miss the attraction of Windbound: a game that doesn't wear its narrative on its sleeve, and instead lets you discover and interpret things for yourself.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Windbound 4 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 3 months ago.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 12 for Moderate Violence. Bright lights and magical effects appear on impact of attacks. Characters let out pained cries upon impact of attacks and flash red to indicate damage being inflicted. When a character has been defeated, their bodies limply fall to the floor where they quickly disappear leaving behind loot. Weapons are a mixture of melee and firearms, regardless of the type of violence, the reaction to the violence remains the same.

Rated for younger players in the US. ESRB EVERYONE 10+ for Fantasy Violence. Players can craft and use various weapons (e.g., spears, knives, arrows) to defeat fantastical creatures (e.g., rhino-like beasts, big cats, rabbit-like animals. Combat is brief, with some animals slashing at players or charging to knock them down. Animals fall to the ground with brief slow-motion effects when their health meters are fully depleted.

Skill Level

11+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. You need the tenacity to harvest resources and craft tools. Shooting and fighting skills are important as well. Younger players can select the Story mode, to avoid the hardest elements. Still, this is a hard survival game that's designed to put the player to the test where you can lose many hours of progress.
