Play OverviewPlay Overview

Xenoblade Chronicles (2010) is a series of open-world role-play games. They take place on the frozen bodies of two warring titans, the Bionis and the Mechonis. In the first game, during an attack on his colony, protagonist Shulk discovers his ability to wield a magical sword (the Monado) and sets out on a quest for revenge with his best friend.

As you explore, fight, complete quests and collect items, you control one character out of a party of three. Free to go where you want in the interconnected environments, day-and-night cycle and affect in-game events, quests, enemy strengths, and item availability.

Exploration, quest completion, and item collection progress your character as well as the main story. You're encouraged to dig into large environments. While you can also take on side-quests from characters you meet. As you do these you collect glowing blue orbs that unlock new items. There are also ether crystals to be found from fallen enemies or ether crystal deposits, which give the player craft items that increase battle stats when equipped.

Your progress affects the game. Relationships between characters affect how efficiently characters work together in battle and gem crafting. Battle encounters are tackled in real time. You control the lead character and party members will "auto-attack" when enemies enter their attack radius. Learning how the different systems work together in these battles can seem complex at first but, once learnt, is a part of the enjoyment.

Content Rating

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is rated PEGI 12 for moderate violence, scenes of moderate horror, and use of bad language. This game features non-realistic moderate violence involving human and fantasy characters. When human characters are hit, they flash and their health gauges reduce. When defeated, they stagger, fall down and remain on the ground for a short time before dissolving and disappearing. Some cutscenes also feature violence although the camera cuts away at crucial moments, disguising the violence. There is a scene in which a character removes his own eye. While the extraction is not shown, the bloody eye socket is seen. The game also includes use of bad language, including '*!@?*', '*!@?*', '*!@?*', '*!@?*' and 'bloody'. There is a scene in which male and female characters bathe. However, steam covers their bodies and nothing sexual occurs.

Skill Level

10+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. You need good skills of exploration and scavenging. In combat, you need to be able to quickly prioritise attacks. You also need good resilience when faced with such a large open world.

You can only play this on older systems (Nintendo 2DS|3DS and Nintendo Wii) but can usually find it second hand on eBay.
