Play OverviewPlay Overview

Aaero (2017) is a rhythm game where you control a spacecraft with one stick and target with the other. At times it's like flying an X-Wing on a trench run while at others it's like soaring high and free targeting enemies in a Starfox game. It's an on-rails shooting challenge that combines flying with combat. Each level is shaped by the music that accompanies it, with geographical elements, enemies and obstacles mirroring the notes and sounds.

Play involves avoiding collisions with your craft while tracing the beams of light or targetting strings of enemies. While you use the left analogue stick to grind your ship against the ribbons of light you absorb energy to use in your attacks. It has the feel of a 90's computer demo as tunnel-like environments speed left and right to try and trip you up.

As you progress the game adds new obstacles and traps to avoid. You encounter strange mechanical beasts that can be taken down by locking on and shooting. It's a game that looks simple but offers considerable challenge and skill to perfect. Players who click with the game find themselves in a state of flow moving from one moment to the next in time with the music.
