Play Overview
Galaxy of Pen & Paper (2012) is a role-playing game about commanding a spaceship crew on missions. You get to design and upgrade your team in a similar fashion to tabletop roleplay games, like Dungeons and Dragons. Here though, it's a sci-fi world. It's the majesty of space with the charm of the basement.
Like any good roleplay adventure, you start by creating your characters, humans and aliens, from their appearance, abilities, roles and gadgets. Entering battles, you roll dice to determine how many actions you can take (attacking, healing, upgrading) before you start. You then enter a digital turn-taking battle like a classic role-playing game.
It's an unusual set-up as you control not only the group but the level of challenge they meet. Decide which side-quests they take on. And decide who you take onto each of these missions. It's a clever combination of digital and physical adventuring that makes you feel like you are in charge as well as entering into a procedurally generated challenge.
There are a number of games in the series that build upon each other. The Knights of Pen & Paper, which are previous to Galaxy of Pen & Paper, have medieval-based adventures and quests rather than sci-fi:
