Gridland (2014) (also Super Gridland on mobile) is a puzzle strategy game where you build a town by day and defend zombie attackers at night. Unusually, resources are gathered by completing match-three puzzles. This puzzle switches from building to defending as day changes to night.

Play involves swapping tiles on a grid to create three-in-a-row matches. During the day these matches give you resources to build a town. During the night these matches give you swords, shields and health. During the day, time progress with each move. During the night, time only progresses when you engage in combat which is triggered by matching gravestones and the like.

The more you upgrade your village the more resources you can find on the grid which give you access to even more buildings and upgrades. It's an efficiency challenge as the more resources you can get from each of the limited daytime moves the better prepared you are for the night.

Each time you kill monsters you get experience and level up. This gives you more life but also offers new equipment. It's a challenge to balance how many monsters you trigger to attack and how many you are able to deal with.

There are 5 main resources: cloth, rock, metal, wood and grain. As well as feed that increases your health. These are used to build a house (where you store your resources), stone coating (for improving reference tiles), weaver (improving cloth tiles), blacksmith (improving stone tiles), sawmill (improving wood tiles).

The Super Gridland version of the game is more colourful and offers detailed visuals. The browser version is the exact same game though, and just as much fun (and it's free).
