Unravel (Series) Accessibility Report

Unravel offers 21 accessibility features in the Difficulty, Reading, Navigation, Controls, Visual and Audio areas to aid enjoyment of the game for different players. This report is created with input from accessibility experts and the player community to help people find games that have the accessibility features they require. Once you have found potential games on the database, there are excellent specialist accessibility sites that offer in-depth reviews to guide your purchasing decisions.

Unravel and the two-player Unravel Two are a pair of jumping and swinging platform games where you control a character made out of wool. As well as making him look super cute, the wool is used to swing around and interact with objects.

NotesAccessibility Notes

While for a lot of the game you won't need to have quick reactions, there are some actions, such as using the yarn to swing across chasms, where you'll need to be able to react quickly. If you're struggling with this, you can use the Slow Motion function to help you. While each level can take quite a long time to beat, there are regular checkpoints where you will start once you resume the game should you need to stop halfway through a level.

With its strong emphasis on visual storytelling, the game has very little text in it, but what there is is high contrast, but fairly small and not adjustable. The 2D platforming style of the game makes it easy to understand where to go next, and interactive objects often have a shimmer to them to highlight them. Additionally, a glowing orb indicates the direction to go by going ahead of you or pointing out key items.

Some pats of the game can be quite dark and low in contrast, and your character's colour can make them blend in as well. To combat this partially, you can adjust the colour of your character, choosing from a range of preset colours that contrast to any background.

DifficultyDifficulty

Unravel has 6 accessibility features for Difficulty which deal with how you can adjust the challenge of play, and assistance the game offers when you fail or get stuck.

Cognitive Pressure

Low Pressure: Game tasks aren't time-limited or there's a low-pressure mode. This avoids the pressure of being put on the clock for overarching missions, or failing tasks because you didn't reach a destination in time.

Adjust Speed: Adjust the overall speed of the game, or rewind play for a second attempt, to ease reaction times. By slowing the game, you have more time to interpret what is happening and then execute your actions. It also reduces the pressure on getting things right quickly or the first time you attempt them.

Save Anytime: The game automatically saves progress or you can save any time, and not lose progress. This avoids being forced back to the start of a level, or checkpoint when you fail a particular challenge.

Assistance

View Control Mapping: You can view a map of controls during play. This clearly displays the mappings of actions to buttons/keys/mouse/keyboard without having to leave the game.

Assistance When Stuck: The game notices if you get stuck and provides assistance. This can offer hints or tutorials popping up during play. It can suggest which difficulty settings to adjust or offer to skip past problematic levels.

Tutorials: There are helpful tutorials, instructions and tips. Information is provided in a timely manner, with appropriate levels of detail. Ideally, this includes ongoing tips that relate to contexts in the game where the player is failing.

ReadingReading

Unravel has 4 accessibility features for Reading which deal with how much reading or listening comprehension is required, how well the game provides visual and audible access to the text and whether subtitles and captions are a good fit for purpose.

Reading Level

Simple Minimal Reading: Minimal reading is required. The quantity and complexity of reading are at a level that a younger child could understand.

Text Visibility

High Contrast Text: Text colour contrasts to the background or can be adjusted to be. The text in menus, instructions and other information is presented in high contrast with a solid background.

Subtitles

Any Speech has Subtitles: All spoken content has subtitles, or there is no speech in the game. This means there is no requirement to hear spoken dialogue or narrative to play the game.

Voiced

All Dialogue is Voiced: All of the game dialogue and narrative can be voiced, or there is no speech in the game. This means there is no requirement to read the dialogue and narrative text to play the game.
