The recruitment turns between battles are fairly short, and as the rounds progress and there is more to manage that can create a high cognitive load and reaction time because you are presented with many choices about how to manage and maneuver your team and then need to execute all of those in in a span of 1-2 minutes.
The practice area allows you to play the game as much as you want without any timer on the recruitment turns, so you can read all of the cards carefully and explore the different mechanics and stories without any of the pressure of competitive play.
