Overview
The story is told through a series of 20 songs, and each song is broken down into section you hear and then repeat by pressing the right buttons. Get it right and you proceed, fail and you simply try again.
Unlike other rhythm games, A Musical Story doesn't try to make you feel like you are playing the music. It keeps things as a simple call and response. While more experienced players may balk at this staccato simplicity, for newcomers it works really well.
As you progress you hear more of the story through each of the songs, and learn about the heroes situation through the connections to his musical memory. Like Sayonara Wild Hearts, each correctly played melody opens a new chapter into Gabriel’s past, bringing him closer to the truth. If you fail you simply try again. Play every song perfectly to unlock a hidden chapter.

Accessibility
There are three levels of difficulty which adjust the amount of assist:
- Off: No assistance with matching beats.
- Auto: Progressive assistance if you fail to match beats to make margins larger and increase visual cues.
- On: Maximised the margins and visuals cues to offer a Low Pressure experience. (Although this means you can't get all the stars to unlock the hidden areas)
If you fail a section you are informed about the assistance mode automatically. When you fail you can try simply try again. The most progress you may lose is less than 30 seconds.
There's no text to read in the game except a couple of phrases in the tutorial and in menus. The button indicators offer colour and symbols to ensure colourblind friendly. Some of the animations are multilayered movement that may trigger motion sickness for some players.
You play the game with just two buttons (Triggers, Bumpers, Buttons, D-Pad or touch screen). But on console and PC you need mouse or stick to start the game and navigate menus. Vibrations indicate errors and you can disable them in the game on PlayStation 5 (not other platforms).
