Along the Edge is a visual novel set in the European countryside, where your choices impact not only how the story unfolds but how your character appears and understands the world. You move through the story by making conversational choices that may have unintended consequences. It stands out for the depth of writing and how well this ties to the branching experience of the game.

You play Daphné who is at a crossroads both personally and professionally. She inherits an old family house and sets off to start a new life that is shaped by her choices. But everything is not always as it seems as the game blends an adult and (at times) occult universe all presented in a beautiful hand-painted style. As the game unfurls it tells a deep branching narrative about love, everyday life and the impact our actions have on both ourselves and those around us.

As you progress you wend your way through the labyrinth of characters and detail. You start to see how your path through the game is being shaped by these interactions. Each choice aligns with four personality traits depicted at the top of the screen. You never totally know how an interaction will go, but over time you get an instinct for how to balance these different traits (or perhaps just double down on one).

The result is a game that offers both meaning and consequence. Playing multiple times lets you try different options and approaches to the story. The sheer amount of writing is impressive and matched by the breadth of decisions, outcomes and character traits you work with.
