Boomerang X Review
Posted: 4 months ago, last updated 4 weeks ago.
Play incorporates the usual running and jumping of platform games, but augments this with a flowing teleporting motion made possible by your weapon. Once you've thrown it, you can slingshot directly to it, preserving momentum and throwing yourself through the air. You can use the slow down time feature to hone well-aimed throws to get around, above, and behind your foes. As you progress you upgrade your boomerang with new and powers.
The result is a frantic skill-based game with b-movie aesthetics. From your mummified character to the bowels of ruined civilization you explore, it's a game with a strong sense of style. Something lurks deep underneath these ruined halls, spewing corruption, it's up to you to defeat whatever it is.
You can opt to toggle the charge ability, but you still need to do multiple inputs quickly because you often need to slow time, charge an ability, aim, and fire, then quickly recall the boomerang. It can get pretty chaotic control-wise.
There is full customisable gyro aiming so you only need to use one stick rather than two. Motion controls can also be paired with the Flick Stick controls. This enables you to flick the stick in the direction you want to look to quickly aim in that direction. You can also adjust aim by circling the stick.
The text is quite clear although it could be larger. Much of the text in menus and the little tutorials is stylized, so some people may have some trouble reading it right away, despite the contrast and text size being good.
The game offers a full High Contrast mode, as well as the ability to only highlight required enemies in high contrast via Accessibility Options. The boomerang charge ability can be set to Hold or Toggle under Accessibility Options. Shield, Required Enemy, and Weak Point colours can all be adjusted under Accessibility Options.
There are audio cues for hitting enemies, which is helpful because some abilities only activate after killing two or more enemies with one shot.
