Costume Quest is an adventure game where you play a trick-or-treating child when they encounter a monster that kidnaps your sibling. You travel the neighbourhood collecting items for your costume, candy and fellow children as companions in order to face the monster and rescue the sibling.

It's a light role-play game where you gain abilities based on the Halloween costume you are wearing. Playing as a child keeps things fun and imaginative. When you encounter monsters there is a battle where you are transformed into giant creatures and take turns to pick attacks. As you progress you build a party of children who help you in quests and battles.

Costume Quest 2 follows a similar pattern, although this time you face the evil dentist who teams up with a powerful time wizard. It has a Bill and Ted feel this time as you go back to the future to race against the clock on Halloween night to try and stop the monsters for good.

There is some violence but it is homespun with cardboard swords and handmade weapons so things never get too graphic.
