Play unfolds like a simple adventure, where you explore the world, collect items and use them with the environment to progress in different ways. You have clues about what challenge you face each night through prophetic dreams.
Each day has multiple potential variations to encounter, from poisonous fog or spiders to a gang of murderous thugs or a deadly heat wave, and as a result, you'll need to adjust your strategy on different play-throughs.
To achieve the things you need to, there is a cost in time. You have to carefully decide what to do otherwise you will run out of time before you are ready for the night's threats. Some actions take longer than others. Fixing a car may take more time then travelling by foot, but once it's fixed you can get there quicker. You also have to consider the weight of what you are carrying as this also affects your performance.
The result is a classic adventure game with themes of hope, survival and friendship. It's like Indiana Jones, Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island but with modern time and encumbrance systems.
You can play this game in the following styles:
The game contains moments where you can shoot people and there is pixelated blood. You character can also die from hypothermia, poison gas, suffocation (lack of oxygen) or deadly insects.
Before you start the game you are prompted to pick clearer or pixelated fonts. In the first area there is a tutorial that lets you practice how the real-time system works.
The game has pixelated visuals but these are generally bright and clear. No puzzles rely on colour to solve them.
The game generally doesn't require fast reaction-time but there are a couple of occasions where you need to click quickly in response to a prompt. You get around 5 seconds to respond and if you fail you can try again with no penalty.
You can get hints from other characters in the game. If you fail the game tells you what you did wrong, which is useful for future runs or if you repeat the day. You can also choose to progress anyway, but this may be with reduced options (or other characters!) for the following day.
Although there are no specific objectives the game tracks successful actions you have taken, which is useful to keep track of what you have done.
