Play OverviewPlay Overview

Dungeon Master (1987) is a classic role-playing adventure game where you explore a dangerous dungeon with your four adventurers. You methodically work through the dungeon maze. It stands out for its (at the time) pioneering 3D first-person perspective, and how you construct spells and organise your party.

Dungeon Master combines exploration with real-time combat elements. What starts simply soon evolves into a complex tactical challenge. You use subtle visual clues and sound effects to be ready for the next monster. You also needed to use switches and runes to solve environmental puzzles that enable you to advance.

The result is a game that although basic-looking, offers considerable depth. Getting to grips with the magic system, arranging your inventory and using sleep to recover are all essential to progress. This combination of an opaque mysterious world to discover and the high-action encounters set the scene for many games that followed.
