Play OverviewPlay Overview

Enter the Gungeon (2016) is a shooting game where you use one stick for running around and the other to aim. These twin-stick controls combine with loads of enemy bullets to dodge to create a tough challenge. You play four adventurers descending into the dungeon to find a time machine that has the power to kill their past. Levels are generated fresh each time you play them. You die a lot but slowly acquire new guns, items and abilities.

Like The Binding of Isaac, play involves quick reactions and movement/shooting strategy. You choose one of four protagonists, each with different abilities - calling in support or lockpicking chests. You dodge bullets, flip tables for cover and shoot enemies to work through multiple floors and rooms, each with a set of enemies with varying strength, endurance, and attack behaviour.

As you progress you find and use the huge array of firearms. 300 different guns and items can be combined to achieve more powerful effects called Synergies. Then, to complete the floor you must defeat the boss who will grant you a special gun or item. You can also rescue non-player characters who then help the player upgrade between runs.

If you enjoy this game, there is a spin-off, Exit the Gungeon, which uses a platform game-approach instead of the top-down dungeon crawler.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 7 for mild violence. The majority of enemies in the game are fantastical, such as walking, gun-wielding bullets and jelly-like blobs. Enemies will either fall to the ground or disappear when killed, and very occasionally there is a red splatter effect. The four playable characters are all blocky, non-detailed humans. When they are struck, they’ll flash and lose a life but carry on. When their lives run out, they will freeze and a cross-hair will centre on them; as a shot rings out, their head will fly back and they fall to the ground, but there is no sound of pain, blood or visible injury.
