Play Overview
Gato Roboto (2019) is a running, jumping and shooting game about a cat in a mechanical suit that needs to save her space commander master. Play involves exploring the levels to take on enemies, discover new weapons and use them to access more of each area. It stands out not only for its black and white visuals but for creating a miniature action-exploration challenge akin to Metroid and Castlevania.
After causing your ship to crash-land on an alien planet, you set off to undo the damage you've done. You work through a dangerous world of irritable creatures and treacherous obstacles. Along the way you need to upgrade your mech suit, find items, solve puzzles and at times risk getting out the suit to reach areas too small to otherwise access.
As you progress you encounter new areas with specific missions. Some need power. Some are flooded and need to be drained. These puzzles are largely solved by blasting and dashing your way through enemies and obstacles to face the guardians stationed precariously throughout the base.
The result is a little game that's a lot of fun. The steady progression and moments of high risk when you are out of the mech suit, work well to keep things fresh. Add to this the secrets and weapons to discover and there's a lot of entertainment in this handcrafted package.
