Play OverviewPlay Overview

Guacamelee (2013) is a running, jumping and fighting game with an emphasis on exploration of a maze of levels. You play humble farmer turned luchador, Juan, on a mission to find upgrades and battle enemies. It's a world inspired by Mexican culture and folklore, full of sassy villains and wrestler-looking friends.

Play involves brawling and jumping your way through single screen areas that interconnect with each other. The platforming requires precise combinations of moves while the fighting is a little simpler. This leads you to discover a huge, hand-crafted world, learning a deep repertoire of attacking and defensive moves to fend off the skeletal hordes and overcome a multitude of jumping challenges.

The second game extends the attacks and features of the original (and continues the story with a new dimension shifting twist) to include new moves like Eagle Boost, Pollo Shot and more add to Juan's arsenal of combat and platforming abilities.

The result is a technically demanding epic adventure through the worlds of the living and the dead, across rifts in time and space. It's a warm game with a big heart, with a wide cast of characters both hindering and helping you.

Age RatingsAge Ratings

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 12 for frequent scenes of mild violence in an arcade setting. Violence is typical of side-scrolling, cartoony arcade games and is unrealistic in nature with flashes of light on impact and enemies disappearing when killed. No blood, harm or obvious injuries are shown.

Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB EVERYONE 10+ for Fantasy Violence, Language, Mild Blood, Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcohol. As players traverse side-scrolling environments, they travel between two worlds (the living and the dead) to perform challenges and battle supernatural enemies (e.g., skeletons, demons, spirit creatures). Players use punches, kicks, and wrestling maneuvers to defeat enemies in melee-style combat. In one sequence, blood is seen dripping from an injured character's face. The game contains some suggestive material in the dialogue (e.g., “Is your mother single?...Does she like bad boys?”; “Uhhh did you just say 'sacrificial virgin'? Haha…yaa…about that…”; “He is lonely and in need of some…Seriously…Heavy…Petting...Double entendres.”). In one sequence, a drunken character slurs his speech and consumes alcohol. The word “a*s” appears in the game.

Skill Level

10+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. It's also important to ensure children understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. The speed of the action requires players to think and react fast. Much of the game you can get through instinctively, but the bosses need more intention. Younger players can use the multiplayer mode to get help from more experienced.
