Play OverviewPlay Overview

Headlong Hunt (2021) is a puzzle game about a field biologist trying to catch and survey the population of a fearful but very fast animal across 37 icy islands. You have to manoeuvre the animals around by scaring them in straight lines. This sounds simple but soon gets complex to get them into the traps and ready for counting.

Each level can be attempted from the start although it's best to play them in order. You move around the just the arrow keys but have to take care of the direction to scare the animal as they will run off the screen if at all possible. You can undo the level whenever you want or reset it.

As you progress, you get biological text snippets that offer hints. You can start to use rocks to hide from the creature, push them into the sea and even have moveable blocks you can place to both stop the creature and obscure their line of sight to you.

The result is a surprisingly polished game (albeit one that looks basic). It takes a simple idea and plays with it in unexpected ways to "explore the possibility space quite well," as Alan Hazelden puts it.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Headlong Hunt 2 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 9 months ago.
