Heavy Rain is from the same Quantic Dream studio who made Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human. It preceded these games but shared the same branching narrative and photo-realistic aspirations.

In this game, you play the parent of an abducted child and must follow a trail of clues and gruesome challenges to save your son. You also play a detective investigating the case, a journalist also interested in uncovering what happened and a private investigator.

The choices you make in the game, and how well you perform in the challenges that require you to press combinations of buttons in quick succession, can result in one of the four characters dying and the narrative changing dramatically.

Additional in-game purchases are offered for items that enhance the experience. On PlayStation 3 you can purchase "The Taxidermist" addition content for Madison Paige, before the events of the main game. This is not available in the game's PlayStation 4 or PC port.

There is also a "Move edition" which allows you to use the Playstation Move controllers to control the game, and this comes with The Taxidermist pre-installed.

This game has received a PEGI 18. Graphic violence, violence against vulnerable and defenceless characters, depictions of sexual violence and use of strong language. There is one scene in the game where your female character is held at gunpoint and told to strip, this can end in full nudity depending on the actions of the player. Later in this level your character has the man who held her at gunpoint, gaffer-taped to a chair as she questions him for information. This involves her grabbing his genitals in a way to cause pain.

The game also contains use of the expletive “*!@?*”.

There are three different difficulty levels that can be selected from the settings menu, and on the lowest difficulty, the reaction time for timed button presses is increased and the number of buttons in sequences and the number of simultaneous button presses are both greatly decreased.

Throughout the game, interactive objects are clearly highlighted with a glowing white outline, and buttons and actions that are required are overlaid over the gameplay similarly. The text in the game, including subtitles, is relatively large and is white with a black outline, ensuring it is relatively clear.

There is a section in the game where you need to remember the colour of the clothing of a character, which is important to note for people or those who struggle with memory recall.

With the Move Edition, you can use the Move controllers instead of using a regular Playstation 3 controller. Either way, there are motion controls that are a part of the gameplay but, where the Move edition gives you the choice of using either the regular controller or the Move controllers, the standard edition does not.
