Play OverviewPlay Overview

High On Life (2022) is a shooting adventure game from the creators of Rick and Morty. As you'd expect it's comedic and zany, but cleverly this is delivered by the bombastic boasting sentient weapons as much as other characters.

You play someone just out of high school who takes on an alien cartel trying to take over the planet. Using your stock of varied and personality-filled firepower you go to various planets to take on this nefarious Garmantuous and his gang.

As you progress you collect loot, and meet an array of funny characters and traverse landscapes ranging from a jungle paradise to a city built inside an asteroid and the hub of the cosmos. To do this you need to learn and use the distinct skills and projectiles of each gun.

The result is a game that's both fun and funny. The quirk of the talking guns works well and means that you hear different voice lines at key moments depending on which gun you are using. For those looking for a lighter shooting game than more serious Call of Duty experiences, this is a great option.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked High On Life 22 months ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 11 weeks ago.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 18 for graphic violence, violence against vulnerable and defenceless characters, sexual threat, and use of strong and discriminatory language. Comic first-person shooter game, in which an alien cartel invades Earth with the intention of turning humans into recreational drugs. Players take on the role of a human who teams up with an alien to counter the threat, including by rescuing and using living alien weapons. This game features the ability to view five horror feature films in full. These films include scenes of graphic violence, including sight of decapitation and dismemberment, and violence against vulnerable and defenceless people, including restrained people’s throats being cut. There are also scenes of sexual threat, including a man undressing a sleeping woman and climbing on top of her. The game itself features scenes of graphic violence towards fantasy characters, including sight of aliens being stabbed and shot, the latter of which may result in decapitation. There is also a sequence in which an alien is encountered that has been bisected but which is still alive, with visible entrails coming from its torso. There is additional gory detail when human corpses are seen, both in the game and in the feature films. Because of the first-person nature of the game, violence against the player’s human character is only implied. Both the game itself and the feature films include use of strong language (‘*!@?*’, ‘cocksucking’), as well as milder terms. The feature films also include some use of discriminatory terms (‘faggot’, ‘homo’). The game also includes sight of drug misuse, such as a powder being snorted, and both the game and the films include visual and verbal sex references. The feature films include scenes of sexual activity, sometimes with breast and buttock nudity, as well as other sexualised nudity. One of the feature films features a scene of suicide, while others feature visual and verbal references to suicide.

Rated for younger players in Australia. Rated Mature Accompanied (MA 15+) for Strong Violence, Strong Themes, Strong Sexual Reference, Strong Drug Use, Strong Drug References.
This was initially rated PEGI 16 for Strong Violence, Sex, Drugs, Strong Language. However, this was updated to "PEGI 18 Extreme Violence, Strong Language" to account for the movie content in the game.

There's a lot of swearing in the game as well as use of phrases like "Jesus Christ" and "tough titties". The nature of the game means that there are violent acts. There's quite a lot of lude jokes as well, like the alien who wants to sell you semen. You also see some drug use in terms of alcohol, smoking and snorting cocaine.

Hidden in the game are four movies you can watch in full that include violent and sexual content:
