Play Overview
Inkbound (2023) is an online adventure set in the pages of books where your magical ink brings things to life and deals with enemies in battle. You play the game in runs, where you pick a book and hunt down enemies in turn-based combat. It stands out for how you develop your character with abilities and items that richly combine to offer interrelated benefits.
Inkbound is set in a world of whimsical and dangerous magic where the written word comes to life. Each book is a portal to another world where different challenges and enemies await. With up to four players you move freely through these worlds to take on villains, collect items and set the stories free.
The star of the show is the turn-based cooperative combat. It combines strategic movement with attacks that are triggered in turn. This means you can combine attacks with other players to gain the upper hand over the enemies. This results in fights that feel quick but can be slowed when enemies demand more consideration.
As you progress you learn how to select and combine upgrades between battles. This lets you craft powerful characters with abilities, upgrades and hundreds of items. While each individual element offers some benefit, it's the chaining together of these elements that reveal the real fun - and super-powerful builds.
The result is a game that is fun to take on with friends. But really, it's about being clever and imaginative about how you combine upgrades and develop your character.
