Video Game Iron Lung Review
Iron Lung (2022) is an exploration puzzle game where you navigate a submarine through a sea of blood with only your instruments to guide you. With no visibility in a small enclosed space, you need to make repairs, stop leaks and take recognisance pictures before time runs out. The claustrophobic setting, lack of outside visibility and eerie photos of dank creatures make an unnerving challenge that demands your full attention.

Our examiner, Ben Kendall, first checked Iron Lung 4 months ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 4 months ago.

Iron Lung is an exploration puzzle game where you navigate a submarine through a sea of blood with only your instruments to guide you. With no visibility in a small enclosed space, you need to make repairs, stop leaks and take recognisance pictures before time runs out. The claustrophobic setting, lack of outside visibility and eerie photos of dank creatures make an unnerving challenge that demands your full attention.

It's the far future and all stars and planets have mysteriously disappeared. The only humans are stranded on decaying space stations, stuck with dwindling resources and few options for survival left. One mysterious moon, covered in a sea of blood, appears to have valuable resources essential to rebuilding humanity at the bottom o a deep trench. You're commanded to take a cobbled-together submarine, the Iron Lung, to go and investigate.

The objective is simple: reach and photograph all ten areas of interest by navigating your submarine through the depths. You have a map which displays the coordinates of each location, along with the shape of the trench. Due to the pressure, the single porthole on the sub must be closed, so you have to rely entirely on your navigation systems to get around. You move by altering the direction of your vessel and can move forward and backwards, with your current coordinates displayed at all times. This means you must continually consult the map and ensure you can reach each objective while navigating the trench to avoid crashing and failing your mission.

As you progress, the sub starts to malfunction, with blood spilling in and fires flaring up all around you that you need to put out with the fire extinguisher. Soon, it becomes a race against time to photograph everything and make it back to the surface before the sub is destroyed while still safely navigating the treacherous ocean.

The result is a unique take on an exploration game that combines the horror of the unknown, darkness and tight spaces with an intuitive and simple control system that requires careful planning and expert management to master.
