Monopoly

Play OverviewPlay Overview

Monopoly (1935) is a strategy traversal game where you buy and develop land to make money from property. As you roll and move around the board you build up a portfolio of streets that you can charge rent on. It's a classic game that's stood the test of time because it's highly competitive yet mixes both skill and chance.

With each turn, you roll two dice and move around the board. If you land on an unowned property you can buy it. If you land on a property owned by another player you pay rent. The cost of this escalates as players work to own a set of streets and add Houses and Hotels to them. The aim is to win all the money.

The result is a game that is approachable, a little frustrating when you lose, but ultimately a lot of fun. It's mildly taxing which means you can easily chat and snack while you play.

Learn to Play: This takes half an hour to learn. If you haven't played before the rules are quite simple, although nuances of auctioning and paying fines take some time to grasp. Also, there are a number of variations that different families often adopt so it's important to establish what these are before you start playing.
  • Do you pay fines into the Free Parking space to create a jackpot if you land on it?
  • Do you allow loans from the bank instead of going bankrupt?
  • Do you auction off property if not purchased by a player?
  • Do you start auctions for an unbought property at $1?
  • Do you use the Speed Dice that accelerates play?

Play Time: This game will take between 1 hour and 3 hours to complete. You can play in a much shorter time if you use the Speed Dice that accelerates how quickly you move around the board as well as getting the property into the player's hands faster.
