You collect cards (which require energy to use) as you play, helping you progress through the ever-harder levels. There are five different decks to collect, of which you use two per fight. Each deck has unique strengths and abilities which can help you in different scenarios.
You choose the route of the train which determines which levels you play. Each level offers a different challenge and a variety of cards to collect. These not only grant you new monsters but unique upgrades to your team.

In Monster Train there are no difficulty settings initially available, but harder difficulties can be unlocked as well as mutations that provide you many ways that you can customize the game which can make it easier or harder and tune the difficulty to how it best suits you
The Static Battle Backgrounds and Camera Shake off options can be found in the Accessibility menu before the game begins, but are not part of an onboarding process and cannot be changed in the middle of a battle. A Deuteranopia colorblind mode is available.
While the UI Scale setting offers a Large option, the text size is still fairly small when enabled.
The game autosaves progress on the run between each battle, but there is no save option during a battle.
