Play OverviewPlay Overview

Pentiment (2022) is a historical role-playing game where you explore 16th century Germany world to solve a murder. Play takes place in the pages of an old book and involves exploring the world, talking to people and discovering new ways the narrative evolves. It stands out for playfully challenging how we think about history, and what happens when you lose control of this.

You interact with the world by walking around, talking to people, and making choices about your conversations. This, together with items you find and events you overhear, slowly uncover a murder. You play through limited time each day, as depicted by the large dial that moves you through Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce and the other canonical hours.

But rather than offering a single plot to uncover, the game focuses on character development and choice-driven storytelling. In fact, you soon discover that you are caught up in a whole series of murders over twenty five years. Only you can solve these crimes, but each decision has lasting consequences and draws you closer to the underlying conspiracy.

As Emily Price writes in Paste Magazine, "It is a beautiful portrait of history that doesn’t limit itself from commenting on labor inequity, parental loss, or artistic hopelessness, all things the medieval and early modern art it draws from portrays so vividly. In bringing some of those stories to us today, Pentiment accomplishes the remarkable goal of being both clear-eyed about the medieval period’s faults, and sincere about its masterpieces."

Our examiner, Jo Robertson, first checked Pentiment 21 months ago. It was re-examined by Andy Robertson and updated 3 weeks ago.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 16 for use of strong language. There is occasional use of strong language ('*!@?*'), as well as milder terms such as '*!@?*' and '*!@?*'. There is some moderate violence, including fist fights and shootings. There is occasional sight of blood staining characters' clothes but the violence is stylised and non-realistic, partly because of the medieval art style. A card game can be played but the game is medieval rather than a modern form of gambling.

Pentiment contains public executions, stylized gore, suicide, references to abortion, frequent strong language, references to sexual assault, and references to sexual activities. Small parts of the game also reference notable alcohol consumption and incidental ergot-induced hallucinations.
