Play OverviewPlay Overview

Reigns (2016) is an adventure strategy game where you take charge of a kingdom, one decision at a time. Each choice is presented to you as a playing card with some advice or a question from one of the 38 different characters. Swipe left or right to make a decision that will impact the church, people, military and wealth of your domain. You have to make choices about complex issues without knowing all the consequences. You have to decide whether the people advising you are to be trusted. As you do, a string of intriguing story threads emerges that will influence your strategy.

It’s a good first role-playing game because it boils things down to simple decisions while raising themes about the complexity of politics. There are a few games in the series, available on all the same platforms, that use this same mechanic but in a different setting or with a different monarch:
  • Reigns: Her Majesty extends the game to a new kingdom with power in a woman’s hands. New characters and a fresh story are a chance to consider patriarchy itself with additional pressures to balance like "being criticised for having too many wrinkles" or “gossiping too much.”
  • Reigns: Game of Thrones draws on the popular TV series and books for characters and plot. If you’re a fan of the series, this can be a good game to start with.
  • Reigns: Beyond: Takes the decision making into space. You don't have an empire but must build one for your rock band.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Reigns 4 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 4 months ago.

Age RatingsAge Ratings

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 12 for use of bad language. Bad language includes the words '*!@?*', 'bloody' and '*!@?*'. There are some scenes of fighting, involving duelling with swords, although these only feature stick figures and show no detail of injuries. There are also written references to violence.

Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB EVERYONE 10+ for Alcohol Reference, Fantasy Violence, Language, Mild Blood, and Suggestive Themes. As players attempt to maintain balance, their choices can lead to acts of violence: an enemy killing a character in a duel; peasants taking over the kingdom; or a general killing a character. Other still images depict small blood stains; one image depicts the cartoony monarch's head on a pike. Some suggestive material appears in the text: "...He has been seen in the Queen's bed"; “A village in the south is encouraging polygamy"; “A duke decides to reestablish the feudal right allowing a Lord to bed a woman on her wedding night.” The game contains a handful of references to ale, wine, and drunk characters. The words “a*s” and “*!@?*” appear in the game.

Skill Level

7+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. It's tempting to see this as a game for the very young. Although youngsters can cope with the swiping mechanic, the weighing of these decisions and management of resources take some skill. Also, getting to grips with the different characters and the wider narrative requires some joined-up thinking.
