Play OverviewPlay Overview

Roblox (2016) is a gaming hub where amateur game-makers create simple online games that often mimic real-world grown-up scenarios, like working in a pizza restaurant, surviving natural disasters, escaping prison, scuba diving or playing hide-and-seek. The library of games is fast-changing and specific games mimic the evolving rules of playground games. Playing with other children and the novelty of familiar topics make this game hugely popular. It also offers children a safe way to experience a huge variety of make-believe scenarios online.

Game creators specify who their game is appropriate for based on the following criteria:
  • All Ages: Content is generally suitable for all ages. May contain occasional mild violence and/or light unrealistic blood.
  • 9+: Content is generally suitable for ages 9 and up. May contain repeated mild violence, heavy unrealistic blood, and/or mild crude humour.
  • 13+: Content is generally suitable for ages 13 and up. May contain moderate violence, light realistic blood, moderate crude humour, and/or unplayable gambling content.
  • 17+: Content is only suitable for ages 17 and up. May contain strong violence, heavy realistic blood, moderate crude humour, romantic themes, unplayable gambling content, the presence of alcohol, and/or strong language. These experiences are only available to 17+ users who verified their ages by uploading a selfie and a photo of their government-issued ID.

You can control which aged content your child can access via the Parental Controls on their account. Note that these age ratings are applied by the individual game developers rather than Roblox itself. You can also select the “Account Restricted” in the user's settings to only allow games suitable for all ages and to disable communication for younger players.

Rated for younger players in Australia. Rated Parental Guidance for Mild Violence, also Very Mild Themes.
Roblox was originally rated as PEGI 7 for mild violence that lacks any apparent harm or injury to human-like characters and pictures or sounds likely to be scary to young children. In September 2022 it was rated as "PEGI !" with “Parental Guidance Recommended” advice. The VSC Rating Board expanded on this change, stating. “This rating was awarded because it contains a broad and unpredictable range of user-generated content, which may contain elements that are unsuitable for younger children. Parents should be aware that most of the content in Roblox is user-generated and therefore constantly changing and evolving. By its nature, some of the content that is added to the platform may be unsuitable for younger children."

The PEGI "!" rating equates to PEGI 12 limits on console settings. This means that players can't access the game if the console is limited to playing only PEGI 7 content.

You can control which aged content your child can access via the Parental Controls on their account. Note that these age ratings are applied by the individual game developers rather than Roblox itself. You can also select the “Account Restricted” in the user's settings to only allow games suitable for all ages and to disable communication for younger players.

Skill Level

7+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it’s important for parents and guardians to ensure they understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. Some Roblox games are aimed at younger players, but you need to be able to cope with interacting with others. Also, many of the games require resilience and fine movement control. By the time children are 11- or 12 years old, they have usually graduated to other games, although Roblox games like Phantom Forces and Jail Break extend this audience into the older age groups.

Account Rating

Account required for online play that has 13 years old as minimum age. Players can be under 13 but will have more restricted experience. Any player under 18 requires a parent or guardian's consent to agree to the Terms of Service when creating an account.

Players over 13 can use the voice chat to talk to specific players or those players that are near them in the game. To turn this on you need to verify your age with a government ID and a selfie photo. This then automatically sets your age and lets you turn on voice chat in the game, as indicated by the microphone above your head.
