Play OverviewPlay Overview

Röki (2020) is a Scandinavian folklore point-and-click style adventure game where you play Tove on a journey to save her family. As you help her to come to terms with loss, you explore deep into a snowy fairytale landscape with strange locations and creatures.

"Every dark fairytale has its monster," says the marketing, but the monsters here join the disconcerting characters to show how creepy or frightening things aren't always bad.

Although, unlike other point-and-click games, you use the sticks to control your character, you still find items in the wilderness to help you solve puzzles and unlock the next path forward. As you go you keep a journal of your adventure, mapping uncharted regions and delving deeper into the lore of Scandinavian folklore.

It's a non-violent adventure with accessible controls and universal themes. This works well for a wide range of family players of different ages and abilities. It's designed to pose a challenge but to also offer help when you need it.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Röki 3 years ago. It was re-examined by Ben Kendall and updated 10 months ago.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 12 for depictions of non-realistic-looking violence towards human-like characters. The most notable example of this occurs when a monster destroys a house, causing the ceiling to collapse on top of a man and a fire to start. The man becomes trapped under the rubble and is unable to escape. There are no visible wounds on his body and the man remains in place under the rubble until the end of the scene.

Rated for younger players in Australia. Rated Parental Guidance (PG) for Scary Scenes.

Skill Level

8+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. You need to have good skills of observation and be meticulous in your exploration. You also need to be happy for quite a lot of reading and processing of mythology and coming-of-age stories.
