Overview
Play consists of point-and-click exploration, where you choose something or someone that looks interesting to talk to or interact with it. To progress you need the right characteristics to match what you are trying to do. For example, have a Muscle score of 5 to push a boulder out of the way, or Stench Armour of 4 to go into a place that smells very bad.
To progress you use the items and equipment you find to change your stats. You can also eat food or drink a potion to gain a needed bonus temporarily. Collecting gear and consumables becomes an important way to continue exploring. In this way you traverse several maps worth of wacky locations, interacting with the characters and puzzles you find, and engaging in turn-based combats.
The result is a game about exploration and puzzles. Despite the fantasy horror setting, it's a light-hearted game that leans heavily on story, jokes and puns (almost every interaction provides some kind of story or joke).

Age Ratings
Most of the horror plot elements land closer to Scooby-Do and Ghostbusters than Call of Cthulhu, and the instances that depict violent or gory acts are of events that have already happened when you arrive (ie static scene, like a pool of blood), but it is worth noting despite the cute graphics and humor that the original source material is fairly disturbing.
Skill Rating
12+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. There's a lot of reading in the game, and the sense of humour isn't to everyone's taste. But for those that like the silly characters and scenarios there's a lot to enjoy.
Accessibility
Shadows Over Loathing is a comedy game and has some settings in the options menu that are presented in such a way as to be funny or even only exist for comedic effect, so if you encounter an option that doesn't seem to do anything significant, it is probably intended for fun. Example: HDR Rendering (High Dynamic Range Rendering)- This is a graphics setting that isn't relevant in a game with only black and white line art, it's so unnecessary that it is absurd and there as a joke.
There are 5 difficulty options (Easy, Relaxed, Normal, Hard, and Eleven).
There is a lot of text in the game, a large portion of gameplay is reading story vignettes and sometimes choosing responses, and most of the text in the game is very clear and high contrast, but lands on small side of the acceptable range accessible text. However, the menu text that has a lot of relevant information for gameplay (such as your inventory, character sheet, journal, effects and perks on your character, and your abilities in combat) uses a text size that is smaller than is comfortable.
Only the Keyboard controls can be remapped, not gamepad or mouse inputs. The game is 2D and doesn't use the type of movement usually associated with the "Invert X-Y Axis" option, but it does have the option to invert the Y-axis, which swaps up and down inputs.
You are able to access the chalkboard in the Detective Agency at any time to look at your to-do list for your Main Quest and any side quests you have officially accepted. Some side quests will not be tracked automatically but you can take notes on the chalkboard as well. The game will provide recall assist by recapping details frequently. You can change the difficulty at any time, and failing a battle multiple times gives you a temporary complete the challenge.
In the options menu the game offers and Arachnophobia option, which makes it where you won't encounter any spiders. It also has an Arachnophilia mode, which states "you will encounter so many spiders" and unlocks spider-specific content in the game.
