Play Overview
Shiner (2023) is a turn-based battle game like Pokemon, but here you are a single rabbit who must learn attacks by being beaten by enemies. Play involves challenging the characters you meet to a fight, then taking turns to pick attacks to be the last animal standing. It stands out for the unusual way you gain abilities and have to work out which will help you progress through a detailed hierarchy of battles.
You start with the knowledge of how to do a simple punch and from there must learn more attacks to work your way up a hierarchy of enemies. Although play focuses on choosing who to fight and winning those battles, the real challenge is working out how to accrue the attacks you need to take down the bigger foes.
As you progress you meet (and hopefully defeat) a colorful and fully voiced cast of fully voice-acted characters as you search for the bully who wronged you. Each one has a unique personality and (more importantly) a unique set of attacks to learn.
The result is a game about hierarchies of power. As your knowledge builds you can put together ever more nuanced packages of the 4 attacks you can take into each fight. It's all wrapped up in a world where words and meaning are as important as brute force.
Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Shiner a year ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated a year ago.
