South Park: The Fractured but Whole (1998) is an adventure role-play game based on the sitcom of the same name. The most notable recent games, South Park: The Stick of Truth and South Park: The Fractured but Whole are role-playing games where you explore the South Park world and gather a team to talk and fight your way through a typically edgy story. They combine the series' staple humour, satire and parody with strategy, puzzles and exploration.

In The Stick of Truth, you play the New Kid in South Park, who befriends the local boys and becomes embroiled in their imagined war between Elves and Men. You choose which side you want to join, and which of the four classes you want to play as (Fighter, Thief, Mage or Jew) as you fight for possession of the Stick of Truth, a stick with unlimited power.

In The Fractured but Whole, a direct sequel to The Stick of Truth, the children end their imagined war and instead start a superhero franchise in an obvious parody of current popular heroes. Once again, there are two vying sides, and you pick which one to join and fight for.

Gameplay consists of exploring South Park, interacting with characters and solving puzzles, and participating in turn-based fights, where you use various powers and attacks, that are determined by your class. There is a significant level of depth to the combat system, which features different types of attacks, weaknesses, strengths, and different types of damage.

Along with these two games, there are also several other games that span lots of different genres:
  • South Park (1998) N64, PC, Playstation. A first-person shooter video game.
  • South Park: Chef Luv's Shack (1999) N64, Dreamcast, PC, Playstation. A party game with questions and minigames.
  • South Park Rally (2000) N64, Dreamcast, PC, Playstation. A Mario Kart-style racing game.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 18 due to depictions of gross violence to human-like characters, depictions of violence towards defenceless human-like characters, and use of sexual expletives. Not suitable for persons under 18 years of age. This game contains infrequent depictions of gross violence towards human-like characters. Some scenes show characters being decapitated and dismembered with very strong blood and gore effects. This game also features infrequent depictions of violence against defenceless human-like characters. This violence takes place against characters who are restrained and not able to escape. The violence that takes place in these scenes also feature strong blood and gore effects. This game also contains frequent use of sexual expletives, the word “*!@?*” and its derivatives are found throughout, and the word “*!@?*” can also be found in the dialogue. One of the major components of this well-established series is the way in which it subverts and satirises modern American social mores and issues. This game is no exception and one aspect of the game play centres around the contemporary issue of police brutality towards African-Americans. The game offers a character creation facility which allows the player to create darker-skinned characters which will result in the police acting with increased hostility towards and even attacking such characters. There are further references such as a mission in which the player enters a police station and sees the cells filled with African-Americans and the police using racial slurs. Some players may find this element within the game distasteful or even offensive.
