You play the game with just two buttons. This allows you to tap as the note indicators scroll towards you. Blue and red notes are both activated with one button, while the green notes are assigned to another button.
you can also tap and hold the blue and red indicators to stretch a note. You can also slide the analog stick left and right to bend the pitch. As you progress this pitch bending becomes an integral part of the game as you need to do this to spin the activator and reach the full range of notes.
It's much like playing a wind instrument, where you have only a few valves and must do the rest with how you direct your breath into the mouthpiece.
It creates a rare and lovely experience that really does make the player feel like they are making the music as much as pressing buttons in time to it. This is extended by the more nuanced aspects of the game, such as tracing the feinter notes with the dial to trigger the more musically dense parts of the songs.
