Streets of Rage 4 is a retro fighting game based on Sega's 1990's Streets of Rage trilogy. Up to four players brawl their way through waves of enemies with the help of disposable weapons. In recreating the sights and sounds of the classic game, it fills a blindspot in modern games that rarely celebrate the simple pleasures of battering enemies with friends sat on the sofa.

Play involves working your way through each of the stages. Before you can proceed you must dispatch enemies with a range of attacks, throws, and Blitz Moves. Each player character has special and combo attacks that can be performed at the cost of some health.

This is more Double Dragon than Castle Crashers and focuses on fighting accuracy rather than button mashing like the Turtles or Simpsons arcade games. It doubles down on this with the introduction of a new combo system and the ability to juggle opponents against walls and other players for extra points and multiple hits.

The result is a trip down memory lane. Unlike the original fighting games that can now seem over simplistic, this modern take offers more nuance and skill. Still, it remains true to those classic arcade games.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 12 for moderate violence and use of bad language. Violence consists of side-scrolling arcade style action in which human characters use fists, feet and weapons to repeatedly hit each other, achieving combos and inflicting damage until their life bars are depleted. Characters flash when hit but their physical responses to being attacked are exaggerated and no blood or injuries are depicted. Defeated enemies fall to the ground and fade away. There is infrequent bad language, including ‘*!@?*’.
Users Interact: The game enables players to interact and communicate with each other, so may expose players to language usually associated with older rated games.

Skill Rating

10+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content.
