OverviewOverview

Sunless Sea is a sea-faring adventure where you pilot a small steamship to explore a Victorian-era London that has been moved beneath the earth's surface. You take on the role of captain but select different ambitions that determine how you will play.

Will you try and become Fallen London's most celebrated explorer, amass enough wealth to retire, or simply find the biggest monsters to battle? As you explore in your small ship you light your way with the beam of your lantern. You must collect and manage resources to help you battle ships and sea monsters as you go.

Each time you set out the map is generated for fresh adventures, but if you sink to your death you will have to start again. Subsequent attempts then inherit some of your previous attempt's possessions.

Along with the steamship piloting, you also make choices about how the story progresses. The world you explore has multiple islands, each with its own story quests. Each challenge requires that you gain special items on the island and then go to defeat sea beasts.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 12 for Sexual Innuendo. The story line for the game is presented as on-screen text, and on occasions it includes matters appertaining to sexual acts. Although cannibalism is portrayed as a remedy to stave off starvation, there are no detailed descriptions of the occurrences.

AccessibilityAccessibility

Sunless Sea does not have a difficulty setting but using the manual save feature frequently while at sea can help mitigate the high challenge level of the game.

The game map is revealed as you travel and discover the world, and very little information is recorded. The area tthe you can see while travelling is limited and dark, and even when lit the world is generally low contrast as part of the atmosphere. Enemies appear and attack quickly and from darkness and often require a quick response.

The text and menus are clear and legible, although some are small. Much of the gameplay takes place through reading and interacting with text boxes, without a lot of clear direction in many of the quests and storylines, which results in the game having a fairly high cognitive load.
