Play OverviewPlay Overview

Super Mario World (1990) is a running and jumping game where you help Mario on his quest to save Princess Toadstool and Dinosaur Land from Bowser and his minions. Play is similar to earlier Mario games, only here the levels are larger and have vertical height, so exploration and discovery is as much of the challenge as the well timed jumps. It stands out not only for being the first of its kind, but how it slowly lets you peel back layer upon layer to discover secrets, hidden levels and a whole host of initially unseen areas.

You explore as Mario or his brother Luigi through the varied worlds and levels with the goal of reaching the goal post at the end. You can also gain a wide range of abilities, such as the versatile Cape, Fire Flower or even ride on Yoshi, a dinosaur who can eat enemies, as well as gain abilities by eating the shells of Koopa Troopas.

Super Mario World is considered a stand out game in the series, selling more than twenty million copies. It is available in a number of releases:
  • Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World (1994) SNES
  • Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 (2001) on Gameboy Advance.
  • Super Mario World (Virtual Console) Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch Online as part of the classic games service.
