Play Overview
The Darkside Detective (2017) is a point-and-click adventure with a British sensibility where you take on investigations as Detective Francis McQueen. Play is the usual combining of objects and moving from location to location, but unlike similar games the humour is understated and the puzzles are always logical. It stands out for its Dirk Gently vibe that steers it in interesting narrative and crime-solving directions.
Detective Francis McQueen is the lead investigator of the underfunded Darkside Division that takes on supernatural mysteries often involving cultists, demons and occult rituals. These are the cases that nobody else will investigate, but needs must so you will.
The game is available in a couple of seasons; the original game and The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark sequel. They each offer around six cases, each with original mysteries, characters and a setting more spooky than the last.
The result is a point-and-click game that knows what it's about. If you are looking for some spooky mysteries (think Twin Peaks rather than Scooby Doo) then this is a great game to play on your own or with your kids.
Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked The Darkside Detective a year ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 5 months ago.

Skill Level
11+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. You need some maturity (or lack of?) to appreciate the jokes. You also need to be methodical when searching areas and combining items. Following the story adds a lot to the game and requires some comprehension.
