Play OverviewPlay Overview

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (2023) is part of a long series of Zelda adventure games. As well as exploring Hyrule you can also take to the skies in an expanded world full of secrets. The game stands out for how heavily it leans into crafting and special abilities to offer many ways to progress dungeons, tackle enemies and get around the world.

You embark on a perilous quest to unravel the truth behind a cataclysmic event that has sent the kingdom into turmoil. In this Zelda adventure, you choose your own route through the sprawling landscapes of Hyrule and the mysterious islands floating in the vast skies above.

The game leans into the popular abilities and real physics in Breath of the Wild. It expands how you can interact and solve puzzles by enabling you to combine any objects to create new ones. This means you can make your own weapons, tools and vehicles to take on the game challenge your own way.

Our examiner, Ben Kendall, first checked The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom 18 months ago. It was re-examined by Andy Robertson and updated 12 weeks ago.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 12 for moderate violence. This game contains frequent depictions of non-realistic-looking violence towards both human-like and animal-like characters. Violence can be inflicted using melee weapons, projectiles, explosives and magical spells. Regardless of the type of weapon used, the reaction to the violence remains unrealistic in nature, with no blood or injuries shown. Bright lights and magical effects appear when characters are hit. When enemy characters have been defeated, they fall to the floor and immediately vanish into a puff of smoke, leaving behind various items for the player to take. When the player's character is defeated, it falls down without visible injuries. Some characters are slightly frightening and the music used to accompany these characters is creepy and menacing.

Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB EVERYONE 10+ for Fantasy Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes. Players traverse and explore open-world environments, interact with characters, forage for food and materials, and engage in melee combat against fantastical creatures (e.g., skeletons, goblins, lizard men). Players use swords, hammers, bows, and explosives to attack enemies that generally disappear amid smoke puffs and/or collectible items. Stylized battles are sometimes frenetic, accompanied by impact sounds, cries of pain, and brief explosions. A handful of creatures (e.g., Great Faeries) wear revealing outfits, with moderate cleavage and/or exaggerated-size breasts; characters are sometimes depicted wearing boxer briefs.

Skill Level

10+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. It's also important to ensure children understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. Although younger children can enjoy exploring the world, to really play on your own you need combat, navigation and planning skills. Being keen to explore the vast landscape and experiment with different abilities is also important. Some resilience and patience help when you can't get to where you need to go straight away.
